Hi there, thanks for the welcome. You're the guy from the Dulcimer Player's forum, aren't you? Well I'm Susi from Sweden, I'm 33 years old and I work as a nurse. I live in the south-west of Sweden but I'm moving to Ireland after Christmas (counting weeks now!). I started playing the mandolin back in 1996 after i fell in love with bluegrass music, and a few years ago I discovered this interesting and in many ways more down-to-earth music style called oldtime music. After I had come across an oldtime jam last year at the Gränna festival, I decided to try to learn to play oldtime fiddle (had played the fiddle for 2 years) and I've had lots of fun with it. At the moment I don't play much because I'm too busy moving out of the house, and organizing for my move to Ireland. I play too many musical instruments so I'm not good at any of them but my goal is to some day at least be ok at playing the oldtime fiddle.. and the other instruments....

Yes, Ptarmigan, I'm moving to Cork in January! So tell me everything about oldtime and even bluegrass over there! I lived in Cork 6 months 1999 so I know of a band named the Lee valley string band from Cork, they're quite good, I bought their CD. Are there open bluegrass or oldtime jams somewhere that you know about? (anywhere, not just in Cork)
Will check the blog!

Hi Susi,
Welcome to the group! Do check the Bluegrassireland blog. It's great for news of what's happening in Ireland. From what I can see on it there seems to be lots of music around Cork City. I'm at the other end of the island (near Enniskillen in Northern Ireland) - and wish there were more music around me than there is. I'm learning the guitar and keep hoping I will find some music around my area. I hope the move to Ireland goes smoothly.

Good choice Susi - I spent a summer in Cork & loved every minute of it. I spent most of my time in a great old session Pub, The Phoenix, but I don't think that's there any more. I wouldn't worry too much about finding out about sessions & gigs, as long as you keep checking Richard's Blog, that's sure to keep you right. Up this way, there's the Open House Festival in Belfast & the Bluegrass & Old Time Festival in the Ulster American Folk Park which are both well worth a visit. There's also a new weekly-ish Old Time session in Belfast. Off the top of my head, I know that Bluegrass & Old Time also happens in Dublin, Wexford, Galway & Clare Oh & don't forget the Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival in Longford. Watch out for "Moonshine" doing gigs in Cork too. But don't worry, Richard's Blog will keep you right. Unfortunately, I'm right up at the other end of the country, on the Causeway Coast, but hopefully we'll bump into one another, sooner or later. Anyway, I wish you a safe & painless flit to Cork & I hope you will be very happy in your new home. Good Luck Dick

Thanks for the welcomes! I actually think I have Deleuran on video from Kattinge Vaerk, do you play guitar and sing? At the moment I'm BUSY (yes busy with capitals!) packing down my house, I have to do it all alone because my husband has been away for almost two weeks, he started his new job in Cork last week, but now he's finishing his work in Sweden which means he's in Norway.. but he's coming back tomorrow finally. Lots of work to do..... Can't wait til we're out of the house and everything is set so that I can relax!!!!! So, no oldtime music practice at all these days, I'm only playing around for my own enjoyment. Mostly Christmas songs, actually! Are there any good sessions in your area, Dick? I have a friend somewhere in N. Ireland that I want to visit (don't remember where he lives) so maybe we could meet up for an own session. Oh by the way, what's the karma for?

Yes, that makes good Irish sense! You sound like you must have Irish Blood in your veins already, so I reckon you are going to fit in very well, in Ireland! ;D
As for sessions up this way, I play in 3 Irish Sessions each week, which you are very welcome to join in with - Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights.
The only Old Time/Bluegrass session I know of up here, is on a Saturday night in Belfast, but I can never get to it, because I'm always working.
Of course we could always have our own wee Old Time Session, whenever you happen to be up this way - that'd be great fun, I'm sure & I'd certainly be up for it.
Cheers Dick

Hey otfiddler. Yes I certainly was at Kattinge Vaerk, and yes I play guitar and sing. So you have me on video? Could be fun to see. What a great weekend. I loved every second of it. All the lovely jams. You shouldn't by chance know Bent Ericson? We became friendly and exchanged e-mail adresses. And now he has invited our band to come and play at the Nääsville festival next summer. The band I play in where at Kattinge too. Big Hungry Joe. We started on the first day as the first band to play for a squaredance session. You can see our myspace profile: www.myspace.com/hungryjoeIf you look at the slideshows, there are pictures from Kattinge. And as Tobias, our banjo player has become webmaster for DAFF, there's a new website up, where you can hear some of the jams, and look at the pictures. I have taken some of them, and I have made the drawings of 'betyrelsen' You shouldn't by chance be on some of them. Now I'm getting curious, as I must have seen you too Here's the adress: www.oldtime.dk/#

Deleuran, you most certainly must have seen me since I filmed you when you sang a certain song for my friend Bengt Ericson ;D. I don't know the name of the song, it was a song he requested. I have the video somewhere but I think it's on my big hard drive so I need to connect the computer there and now I'm soon going to work:( I'll share it with you later.
Bengt, his friend Thomas, myself and my husband have had a band, it started in May but now I guess it'll fade out since we're moving to Ireland. Anyway, we played oldtime and some Irish music, my husband played the fiddle and I played the mandolin, and for the Irish tunes I played bouzouki or tin whistle. We do have a planned gig at Gränna next year though. We plan to actually go, so we won't have to cancel the gig, and of course to meet up and have fun.
How great that you are coming to the Nääs festival! They do need some more oldtime there. Just a pity I can't be there! But I hope I can come to Kattinge next year too. By the way, the new website is great.
Dick, I'm sure I'll fit in fine in Ireland ;D with all my bohemian ways.

Yes, it was the song Lynchburg Town that I was singing. It was that song that got us talking, and later I mailed the lyrics to it beacuse he fell in love with that tune. So you could say that Lynchburg Town is the reason why we are invited to Nääsville One of them anyway. Fortunately he liked the sound of our band as well. I don't remember you filming, but if I'm not quite wrong I remeber you and your husband very well. You played the mandolin, and one late evening we jammed with you husband among others. He played the fiddle then, and accordeon. I later found a picture from Nääsville, with Bengt and you two, Correct me if I'm wrong. Click the link: www.naasville.se/bg2007/WI1.jpg-for-web-LARGE.jpgI'm very much looking forward to next years Kattinge, and hope to meet you there.

Dick, now you got me interested. You have problems with the headphone socket on a Mac? What's your problem? Do you know what to do to fix it? I have a Macbook, and the thing seems to believe I have headphones plugged in when I haven't, so it won't play any sound... I don't know what to do with it. Any ideas? Jesper, yeah, that's me and the band! I'll see if I can find the video when I have time (not this weekend, I can tell you that). I'll listen to your recordings too when I have time. This weekend will fly. I've worked late today and now it's nearly bedtime, tomorrow I have Italian class and after that I work until 21.30, Sunday is first Sunday of Advent and I definitely want to be in church since it's probably the last Advent celebration I'll attend for a long time. And - surprise surprise - after church I work until 21.30......SIGH Well, you have a good weekend.

Hey what is it with you two? I use a Mac too. Not an iBook though but a stationary socalled Mac mini Intel. I have som external speakers plugged in, but when I want to use my earphones, I have to go into the system an chose Sound and then sound out, before they work. Have you tried to look at the sound settings in the system. Maybe the sound out has been turned off for some reason. I heard a joke the other day. An error 40! It means the error sits about 40 centimeters in front of the computer ;D And Susi. Nice to meet you in myspace. Now we're friends in space It certainly sounds like you have got your hands full, so just take your time. This forum doesn't run anywhere (I hope! It's a nice and cosy place to be, and good company But whenever you get the time, It could be fun to see the video. And a fond memory too. Good wekend to you too. And by the way, good luck with your moving to Eireland.

I forgot one thing about this computer/sound problem. One time I couldnt understand why my headphones didn't work. It showed up I had plugged it into the hole meant for the microphone ;D A typical example of an error 40 ;D

Yes, I've checked the sound systems but because I have a connector jammed in the Headphone socket it doesn't give any other options! We don't even have a Mac retail outlet in the whole of Ireland! I must admit I have no idea whether it has a socket for speakers, but if it did, then of course I'd happily buy a set of speakers for it, which would give me sound again. Cheers Dick

The speakers are connected via an USB connector (or whatever it is called?) and you have a socket for that, don't you? What kind of connector is it you have jammed in the headphone socket? What is it used for?
