Aye, it's the USB connector from a set of headphones which snapped off & remains stuck in the socket!

Apple has a big company in Cork so there should be somewhere where you can find stuff for Macs. Mine has one normal socket for headphones, and one for some other sort of connection, and my computer seems to switch between those two systems all the time and think I've connected something to the other one and that it can't use the built in output. Hard to explain...

Mine has a normal socket for the headphones and one for the microphone, right next to each other. The external speakers use a USB port. I have never heard of headphones connected via a USB port. But allways remember to go into the system and change the setting, or else it will use the internal sound output. And if you have connected a set of headphones and not any external speakers, you can't hear a thing befor the settings are changed. I have both head phones and external speakers connected most of the time, but every time I want to switch from one to another, I'll have to change the settings.
I don't know if any of this are of any help, as I don't really know, what your problems are.

Sorry Jesper, but yes of course, I meant Headphone Jack Socket not USB. Duh However, you talking about USB gave me an idea & as a result, I've just ordered a pair of USB Speakers! So hopefully, once those arrive, I'll get my sound back again ........ & much better quality sound too, into the bargain - fingers crossed. If not, well at least I'll have good speakers waiting for my next Mac to arrive. I'll keep you posted. Cheers Dick

As for my computer, I don't have any microphone socket in my Macbook, but an excellent internal microphone, now I only use our external soundcard with a stage mic for recordings though. When I switch between headphones and internal speakers I don't need to change the settings. Now it seems like the internal speakers have been uninstalled or such, it doesn't even appear on the system preferences anymore. Probably a hardware problem, I will take it to the store as soon as I have time. Not this week

Hey Dick. You won't regret I think. I have a couple of Roland speakers, pretty big for a desk, and with a big sound too. Less could do it. You can get many smaller speakers with great sound. Though I have a stereo player, most of the time nowadays I use the computer for playing music. I use iTunes as a "jukebox". Set it on randome and let it choose what to play. And the music store is a fine thing too. There are a lot of old time stuff, if you can just find it. Just yesterday I bought a CD with Carolina Chokolate Drops. Great stuff. And in a couple of minutes I can play the CD and burn a copy, and print a cover with the little smart program MyCoverCD, which can be downloaded from the net. And all this without having to leave my chair. Isn't that grand? This forum are going to be pretty expensive for you First you bought a region free DVD player, and now a set of speakers. What's next? ;D And Susi. It's not a laptop I'm using, so I'm sure there are some differences, but as far as I know (I might be wrong though) if you have headphones connected, it will automaticly choose the phones for the sound output. If I unplug the speakers and the phones it doesnt show anything in the system, but the sound output are there anyway, and you can adjust the output volume and balance etc. If I then plug in the headphones, the sound comes out only through these, so maybe there are nothing wrong with your computer when it comes down to it. It's just a guess. I would try to unconnect the phones and check if there comes any sound from the internal speakers. But maybe you have allready tried that?

;D ;D Well, well. What do you call it? I was thinking more in terms of liquid stuff, you know. Like beer og something. (Now i looked it up in the dictionary, to see if I made a fool of myself. But you know, when you write in a language that is not yours, mistakes and misspellings can happen. But it looks like this is not one of them. Sadly we're so far apart, that we can't touch glasses on this one ) And here's to you....!
