Tim rogers here. I'm a fiddler and a banjo picker and a mandocrucian. I dig the old time, and play with the Rough Deal String Band whenever I can, which ain't much since I moved from Dublin/Kildare to the west of Ireland. I recently called my first barn dance, a few squares and circle mixers. I'd be keen to hear from any old time players in the west/northwest.

Hello Tim, I'm delighted you decided to join us. I was actually speaking to you guys up at Omagh last year - '06 Anyway, I've PM'd you about one musician who lives over in the Sligo area, who you might enjoy meeting up with, if you don't already know him. I'm hoping this forum will attract a few more Irish Old Timers. Cheers Dick

I know the west of Ireland is not small, but do you know Lena Ullman - banjo from around the Feakle area in east Co. Clare?

Hi Tim,
Welcome to the group. We enjoyed listening to you guys play at Omagh in 2006 - just caught you in passing this year unfortunately. I've just re-read Rough Deal's biography on the Folk Park's website and I see you are a fellow North American (I'm from Canada). As I've said elsewhere, ironically I only got into oldtime since I came to Ireland (my passion was Irish music in Canada - always seem to be in the wrong place! haha!).
Have you found anywhere to play since you moved to the west? Where are you looking for music? I live in Fermanagh and haven't found anything close to me at all (there's a bluegrass - not oldtime - band in Omagh but no jams or sessions that I can find there) - I'm just learning the guitar so it's rather frustrating not to have any jams etc near that I can go to and learn (yes, I'm using cds and dvds but it's more fun with real people!). If you manage to lure anyone out to the wilds of the west to play let me know so I can come along and listen!
Dianne

Ha Ha I was in the crowd too, in 2006, listening to them.
Next time we're all in the same place, let's make sure we're all playing tunes together, eh? ;D
Cheers Dick

That's rather ironic - I'm always saying I can't find any musicians around my area and I was probably standing almost beside you listening to Rough Deal! I guess we should wear badges saying something like 'musician looking for session' next time we go to any event - might help us meet up easier. Dianne

Yes Dianne, I agree.
Perhaps I should look into the costs involved in producing Old Time Music Forum (Europe) - BADGES! ;D

I know I'm saying a bad word but....I've noticed on the ukbluegrass.com forum (there's the word said!...) they were discussing the badges that someone made for them - I think people were wearing them at either the Sore Fingers Weekend or a gig somewhere. Might make it easier to spot musicians in the crowd (I can just hear many groaning at even the idea!)

Aye Dianne, I know what you mean, cause I wouldn't wear those either & shudder at the very thought of it. However, I was thinking more of those stickers that folks stick on their instrument cases. I think folks are more likely to actually use those ............ but maybe not! Cheers Dick
