I got this story many ears ago.
It happened in the northern part of Jutland.
A carpenter and a electrician had done some repair on an old house
belonging to a seaman who had chosen to stick to the hard ground due to his age.
They were sitting in his kitchen having a beer and they started talking
music. The electrician told the old man that he and some friends played
Irish and folk music when they had the time and he wanted to learn how to play the mandolin. There was a mandolin for sale but it was
expensive. But he was planning to bye it.
The old seaman then said, that he had a mandolin somewhere in the house or in the attic. They started looking for it but could not find it.
Now I know where it is! the old man said, it is outside in the pile of
bricks and timber near the house. The electrician went outside and found a mandolin case and when he opened it there was a mandolin inside. He went back and asked the man what price he would sell it for. Well, I bought the mandolin in Galveston years back when I was
a young seaman. Never played it much, you can get it for 30 beers.
ca. 20 pounds in todays money.
So the deal was made . He went to the grocery shop for the beers and got the mandolin.
When he came home he sat down and opened the case. The mandolin was dirty and the strings were green. He telephoned one of his friends whom he knew was a bluegrass musician .
What is the name of the mandolin?, he was asked.
I dont know, wait until I have removed some of the dirt.
Oh, here it is, the name is Gab something.
Sure it isnt Gibson?, the friend asked
Yeah, you are right, it is Gibson.
And it was.
The rumor spread and one day he was offered 200 pounds for the mando. And that was a lot of money 29 years ago.
He turned the offer down knowing the Gibson was a lot more money worth.
Lucky man.
cheers,
John
