Clark Kessinger
Clark Kessinger was one of the greatest old time fiddlers still active in the early 1970s, when the original (and current) Rounder Records owners produced this recording. As the Kessinger Brothers, Clark and his nephew Luches recorded over seventy sides in the late 1920s with fiddle and guitar. Clark remained an excellent fiddle player throughout his life and won many awards including first prize as the World's Champion Fiddler at the 47th Annual Union Grove Old Time Fiddlers Convention the day this record was recorded. Originally released in 1972.

Here on compact disc is a re-issue of what many feel to be one of the best fiddle albums ever issued. West Virginian Kessinger had recorded dozens of tunes in the 1920’s for the Brunswick label, but had been living in obscurity when “rediscovered” by folk enthusiast Ken Davidson in 1964. These recordings were made shortly after he teamed up with guitarist Gene Meade and banjo player Wayne Hauser, who were to accompany Clark on most of his engagements & recordings. The 17 tunes here are a unique part of the mountain cultural heritage, featuring a master old-time fiddler in a highly dynamic, driving setting that makes for great listening. A wonderful disc & highly recommended! SANDY RIVER, CHINKY-PIN, SALT RIVER, RED BIRD, SALLY ANN JOHNSON, BILLY IN THE LOW GROUND, HELL AMONG THE YEARLINGS, DANCE ALL NIGHT.

After releasing nearly one hundred sides in the 1920s, Clark Kessinger—like many other musicians of the time—lost his recording career during the Depression. This album is his first since 1930, although this fine fiddler continued playing on radio and at local dances, as well as at the National Folk Festival in Washington, DC in the late 1930s.
