I didn't know of Jane Rothfield untill recently, when I got her as a friend in the Fiddlehagout, and became interested in what she was doing, and corresponded a little with her.
She' a very fine fiddler, who also plays the clawhammer banjo. You can hear some tracks on her fiddlehangout site: www.fiddlehangout.com/myhangout/music.asp?id=1482
She also have a fine CD out, called In The Moment, which features other fine musicinas as well. Among Other the fine young fiddler Matt Brown.
It's available on CD Baby, and she would be pleased if I would recommend it, and I certainly will.
This very fine modern old time music, and a mix of traditional tunes and tunes that she has written herself. I quote from the notes at CD Baby:
"Jane Rothfield brings new life and spirit to old-time music, while expanding the old-time repertoire. For In the Moment, Jane is joined by Matt Brown, Allan Carr, Paul Sidlick, Bob Taylor and others. Together they perform traditional old-time tunes and songs as well as 12 new tunes. Jane leads the way on fiddle throughout the album, while also showcasing her fine touch on the banjo and a strong, clear singing voice. The idea of this project was to replicate the experience of playing with a group of musicians who are well versed in traditional idioms and willing to let the music surge in spontaneity. By all accounts, it worked.
Jane Rothfield plays old-time music with a modern twist. An early fascination with traditional music inspired a move to Scotland in the early 1980’s where she toured and recorded with Scottish singer guitarist (and husband) Allan Carr and Silly Wizard bassist Martin Hadden. Today you can catch her performing at dances, concerts, music camps and festivals with her band Jane's Gang or with her husband Allan Carr playing their unique fusion of American and Scottish based tunes and songs."
