Has anyone been to the festivals in Ireland? Which one should I go to? (apart from Omagh, of course) Athy, Open House (saw that my hero Tim O'Brien was there last year), how are they? Good jams? Do they have workshops or that kind of stuff?

Hi, I've only been to Omagh & Open House, so I guess I'm not much help to you! I enjoyed Omagh the year before last, but couldn't get to it last year. I do know that Lasse, who I believe you know { from the band "Big Hungry Joe" } did go last year, but from speaking to him, I understand that he didn't manage to find any sessions. However, I could be wrong, but I don't think he actually got around to speaking to many of the bands & I'd say if you go to Omagh, you should certainly make a point of chatting to ALL the musicians there that you'd like to jam with & I'm sure they'll tell you when & where to get yourself involved in some of their sessions ..... especially their quiet, behind the scenes sessions! The only other one I've been to is the Open House in Belfast. However, I only managed to catch a little of one OT session plus a Fiddle Class with Dirk Powell. They usually bring along excellent musicians, plus many of the local Belfastians { } are out of the top drawer! So, you would be guaranteed to get some great sessions. How many of them will be OT this year, well depend on the OT line up of the guest list, so I'd check the programme as soon as it comes out. I hope others will weigh in here with more useful first hand info for you. Cheers Dick
