Thank you for the tip, John. The only one I know are the Improbabillies. If the rest are up to that standard they are worth looking for.

Good list John. Some of it very progressive...Like the Horseflies and Plank Road. I have only heard a few tracks. Another one of the most influencial "newer" (60s) OT groups is The Highwoods String Band. They got alot of people into oldtime back in da day....or so Im told.
I have that classic Fuzzy Mountain String Band record...but...and I might by lynched by some oldtime fans now....but I find that record kind of boring. Just a little to pretty at times...and in need of a little...just a little...singing or yelling once in a while.
One of my favorite groups is The Red Hots...man thats good stuff. The punk-rockers of Oldtime. :-) You can by their record "ready to roll" on ITunes.
/Tobias

Seems like you'd have to include...
The Hollow Rock String Band - Alan Jabbour's original group with Tommy Thompson on CH Banjo.
The Highwoods String Band (already mentioned by tobias) - with Mac Benford, Walt Koken and Bob Potts.
The Freight Hoppers - with David Bass fiddling, Frank Lee on Banjo, and Cary Fridley playing guitar and singing with the voice of an angel.
The Foghorn String Band - probably my current favorite since they dip into Midwestern tunes as well as those from the Eastern regions. As an aside, their banjo player doesn't play CH style. I think he's a two finger player.
And, of course, Tommy Thompson's best banjo playing was probably done with the the Red Clay Ramblers - before they went to New York and added the piano.

Hey OTJunkey. Nice to meet you here too. Foghorn Stringband has been mentioned many times elsewhere in this forum. I have certainly mentioned them several times, as they are among my favorite OT bands.

Hey OTJunkey. Nice to meet you here too. Foghorn Stringband has been mentioned many times elsewhere in this forum. I have certainly mentioned them several times, as they are among my favorite OT bands. Thanks - it's nice to be here. The place feels quite comfortable. I forgot to mention another current favorite band of mine - "The Wilders" based in Kansas City. They're a bit different from other string bands because they play a lot of acoustic country music from the 40's - Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, etc. But they also play a lot of fiddle tunes from the region. They play dances as well as concerts and their fiddler, Betse Ellis, is among the best OT fiddlers working today. She has a very different style than - say - Sammy Lind or David Bass and her playing is a really good example of the kind of fiddling that went on in the middle of the country in the first half of the 20th century.

Aye Jesper, these guys played over here at the Omagh Folk Park Festival in 2006 & they are a great band for sure, but I suppose because I'm a Fiddler, Betse fairly stole the show, she is such an enthusiastic, dynamic player.
Cheers Dick

Hey otjunky. I allready mentioned the link to that video two month ago. You can find this and a lot others under the section Old Time Links/Old Time YouTubes. And I can tell that Bill Birchfield came out of hospital again in mid december, but still have some trouble breathing. You can read about what happens on the Hilltoppers myspace site: www.myspace.com/roanmountainhilltoppersBill's daughter writes in the blog about what's happening to him. By the way. Nice hat you have got there, Tobias ;D
