Let me add Hobart Smith to this list, he's my favorite player. Folk Legacy have an album by him and there have been several put out in the last couple of years, one in the Lomax collection and another from recordings made by Fleming Brown.

Those of you who were at the Gainsborough Festival last weekend will probably add
Adam Hurt Tim Bing
There were mutters from a number of players about going home and burning their instruments having seen those two....

By the way, do you know if Kristian plays a Johannes Banjo? Cheers Dick P.S. So he's his son! Oh well, I guess he'd just have to play one of Daddy's Banjos then! Yes, I do. I got the JB banjo #1 (the prototype) as a birthday gift at some point, 25, I think. I am very happy with it obviously. And since i play quite a lot, all the wear and tear shows up on my banjo first, so I bring it along to my dad whenever I see him and we spend typically a day(well, a night usually) fixing small things and giving it an overhaul - I wear frets fast.. Favourite banjo players, though: I am very happy to see Scott Phillips is on the list, I really like his playing alot! Richie is already up, so is Adam Hurt and Frank Lee. David Winston is missing though, but it might because he is not very active these days. Also, I think Mark Olitsky (not sure about the last name) has a great drive. He always plays at one particullar spot at clifftop with Jason Sypher on bass, near the baskeball court - if you've been there, you know who I mean. /Kristian EDIT: GAH! forget to mention Leonard Podolak. He plays clawhammer in The Duhks and Turtleduhks. The duhks is a folk-rock kinda band, and I just love how he can make clawhammer sound so 'right', just adding the right notes at the right time. For people who would like to hear how clawhammer can be used in less traditional context, watch this youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVJWA4iqFVc - he also plays jigs in clawhammer. TurtleDuhks is a more traditional stringband, but I havent gotten their CD yet.

He played banjo on an album called "oldtime blah, blah blah..." with a band called Bad Dog. I listened to that album alot when I just got it. But I kinda grew tired of it for some reason. Not his banjoplaying though. It availiably through both ITunes and CDBaby cdbaby.com/cd/carryonrecsIs Reed Martin on the list? /Tobias

There are some youtube recordings of them somewhere though for the clifftop jams.. I'll see if i can dig some up later. Because they rock. /Kristian

I think that the album was an attempt to capture their Clifftop festival sound. That would be hard to do on record I think. Do you know Tom Riccio from The Red Hots? He deserves to be on the list. www.bobvillemusic.com/redhots.htmcdbaby.com/cd/theredhotsOne of my favorite contemporary bands. /Tobias

I jjust joined this list and was pleasantly surprised to see myself on the list of favorite banjo players. So thanks John--whomever you really are--for nominating me. However, now that I'm on the list I believe I'm in a unique position to say that I think such lists are pointless--I know many great players who most of you have never heard of while some names on this list are not particularly noteworthy. But then, many of those strong players don't have web pages (and neither do I--except for a MySpace and Banjo Hangout presence--plus listing as an emeritus on the now defunct, Troublesome Creek website). I hope all of you can come to Clifftop next year--you would be amazed (as I am) at the depth of talent! --Steve

Hey Steve. Now I get curious. Where can we find you on MySpace and the Banjo Hangout? We are some members here, who have their profiles both places. And i get even more curious when you write Troublesome Creek. Should you by chance have been a member of Troublesome Creek Stringband. This fine band visited Denmark last year, and played at the annual old-time music and square dance gathering in Kattinge in september. If you were there, we are some people here, who met you last year. Including John. Who is a driving force in Danish Old time and played bass with a couple of bands at Kattinge last year. You can see, read, and listen to last years gathering here: www.oldtime.dk/ Including pictures of yourself if you are the one I think you are. If not, I am sorry to confuse you with another person, and hope to learn more about you. Welcome to the forum ;D

Hi Jesper hi Steve, Mr. Steve Arkin played the banjo on FAST AS TIME CAN TAKE ME. A highly recommended cd with Troublesome Creek String Band. Some of the best clawhammer banjo playing in years on that cd!! Steve was not present at the Kattinge træf. Bill Wellinton was on banjo on that tour. And welcome to the madhouse, Steve. cheers, John

Thanks for the accurate explanation. I'm not on MySpace--but I am on Facebook (one can't be everywhere). I'm also on Banjo Hangout--I don't know why Jesper couldn't find me there. Anyway, unfortunately there is no Troublesome Creek String Band anymore. I live 500 miles away from everyone else and we have all pursued new musical interests (I've been playing in Llightning in the East with two of my favorite fiddlers--John Hoffmann and Emily Schaad. But we don't have a website or CD or anything of that sort yet. I have some footage of a concert on DVD, but I can't figure out how to post it anywhere. --Steve

Thanks Steve. We eventually found each other on the hangout and on facebook. You're right we can't be everywhere, but amazingly, many of us are ;D Eric Schlange just opened up a Flatpicker hangout, and as I'm mainly a guitarist, I couldn't resist. Jesper
