I guess I won't be popular in an old time forum if I say Svend Asmussen ;D He's certainly not old time, but a favorite of mine anyway. I miss Tommy Jarrel and Benton Flippen, Fred Cockerham on the list. And young ones like Andy Edmunds. www.myspace.com/theofficialandyedmondsHe's a student of Benton Flippen. And Matt Brown. www.myspace.com/mattbrownfiddlesAnd from Denmark I could name Anne-Marie Kanne of the Barking Bulldogs, and Ole Rossel of Possum Whackers.

Jesper, naturally I couldn't leave Tommy off the list, that's why I started with him .. for Tommy read - Thomas Jefferson Jarrell 1901 - 1985. [ .. his Sunday name! ] However, I don't want to choose them all myself, so many thanks for all the names you have put forward, so far. The fact is though, that I'm trying to keep this particular board for popular American musicians, so if you'll forgive me, worthy as they are, I'll leave those European names you've suggested for now. Cheers Dick

Thank you Dick! I appreciate that. When I saw that John mentioned Roy Acuff, and he came on the list, I thought that Vassar Clements belonged there as well!!! He's a better fiddler, that's for sure. I first heard him on the wonderfull double album "Will The Cirkle Be Unbroken" where the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had invitet all those great old musicians in to jam along: Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Mabelle Carter, Roy Acuff, Vassar Clements and Merle Travis. Maybe the best bluegrass album ever made. That's where I fell seriously in love with the music back in the 70th. Most bluegrass I've heard since that one, can't compare. Vassar Clements played the fiddle with the band Old And In The Way, that David Grisman, Jerry Garcia on 5-string banjo (Yes he's the one from The Greatfull Dead), and Peter Rowan formed in the 70'th. Clements didn't know these young guys with their long hair and big beards, but enjoyed their company very much. The story goes, that after a tour they drowe into San Francisco, Clements saw a billboard with the Greatful Dead, turned to Jerry Garcia, and said: "Hey, that's you up there!" Nobody had told him, that Garcia was famous and he had never heard about the Dead. Later on Jerry Garcia and David Grisman has made some CD's together, with guitar and mandolin. At least two of them, "Not For Kids Only" and "Shady Grove" must be considered old time cd's. Happy New Year, Good ole Roy is mentioned because his was an old time fiddler at first. Then he went modern and the rest is history. Vassar is a swing jazz fiddler in his own right. He plays ole time and bluegrass but with swing and jazz feel. His own words!! cheers John

I like jazz and swing as well as I like old time music. I don't need a straitjacket when it comes to my taste in music. ;D Happy New Year to you too. Jesper

Cheers John I didn't know that Mark O'Connor played the guitar. I only knew him as a fiddler. Just checked him out on YouTube and heard him play both guitar and fiddle on a TV show with Chet Atkins, and must say he's not bad on the guitar I have a DVD called Tony Rice, The Video Collection, where there, among others, are videos from a concert, with a band consisting of Tony Rice on guitar, Mark O'Connor on fiddle, Sam Bush on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Bela Fleck on banjo and Mark Schatz on bass. And man!! If there ever was a bluegrass supergroup, this is IT !! ;D ;D

Well, back to fiddle players. Came to think about the great fiddler Magnus Norrman from The Steam Boat Entertainers , Sweden. I consider him and Ole Rossel for the best old time fiddlers in Scandinavia today. cheers John

Thanks Dick! "Wonder Where You Are Tonight" and "Freeborn Man", are two of the tracks on the DVD I was talking about. This gives me the goosebumps ;D And remember this music wouldn't have existed without the old time/folk music. Holy crap! I love this just as much as I hate main stream bluegrass. No matter how fast they play. Now I dare show a video with the Grisman Quartet, with Mark O'Connor and Tony Rice, in this old time forum. It's not old time, not bluegrass, not jazz, an yet a little of it all. But great music, played by great musicians. It's Dawg music. www.youtube.com/watch?v=x05z27blg80

I have got a very good myspace friend, whom I have corresponded a great deal with. Mike Jarboe. He's a journalist and a fiddler who live upstate New York. He plays with the band Dirt Road Molly that can be found in MySpace too. In the 70'th he was a deadhead, and as he writes on his space site, he has met Jerry Garcia and Bill Monroe, which as he says, means that he has met everybody worth meeting He has send me a CD with 300 recordings from OT festivals he has attendet, and are working hard to convince me, that I have to go to the Mount Airy Festival this coming year. I look forward to recieve the recordings. He has also send me links to a few videos with himself on youtube.
